Becoming a Responsible Homeowner – Window Replacement Information

akron replacement windows

Most homeowners want to constantly improve the look of their home, that much is true. However, not all homeowners have that luxury because of many reasons. Some renovation plans get pushed back because of a needed upgrade. There are just so many parts in a home that needs attention which makes it hard to keep everything in check.

There are things inside your home that you can easily check for damage. If the lights suddenly stop working, you can check to see the electrical wirings among other things. If one of your appliances suddenly stops working, you can really tell because of its immediate effect on your way of life. Unfortunately, in some parts of your home like windows for instance, it can be rather hard to check for damages. Even determining if you need to consider replacement windows can be a complex problem.

Changing your windows the right way

In most homes, normal windows would show wear and tear on their glass after about 10 years or so. It’s around that time that windows show their age with hairline cracks showing up on their edges. Fortunately, ten years is a long time for window replacement. You may find many other reasons for changing your windows in less than ten years – perhaps a style change for your home. Whatever the case is, window replacement is a serious thing. Think of your windows as your first hand protection against unwanted elements. You may think that is what the wall is for – well, that is correct, too, but you get the point I’m trying to make.

Checking your windows

To determine if your windows need some replacing, you need to check its functionality. The first thing to look into is the glass pane. That is the most exposed part of the window and accidentally is also the most vulnerable. Several years of getting exposed to constant weather changes can wear your windows down fast.

You also need to look into the locks and bolts on your window. Can you lock and unlock them easily? Can you get it unlock from outside? Are they working as intended? Those are some of the few questions that need answering to help you determine if your house is due for a windows replacement.

Do what makes you happy

Overall, the decision is all yours. You can have the most functional windows but if you aren’t happy with the way it looks, you have all the power to change them. While window replacements don’t come cheap, the security it can provide for your family can be worthless. Also factor in the happiness it would bring you once you see how well it goes with the carpet.

What to Look For In a Good General Contractor?

General Contractor

General contractors are the people you allow into your home and carry out some serious duties but do you fully trust in their abilities? The problem with most home owners is that they hire a contractor too quickly without screening them which often spells trouble. While there are many great contractors, there are also many terrible ones too but how can you tell the difference? The following are just a few examples of what you need to look for in a good general contractor.

Excellent References

Everyone has to start somewhere and newbie’s don’t always have references to back up their qualifications but that does not mean you should be reckless. When you let a general contractor into your home, you must be one hundred percent sure they are trustworthy. References can help give you a whole new picture of someone and believe me, they are powerful stuff. If contractors haven’t had glowing reports in the past then there is a reason; and that is why asking for references are crucial. Unfortunately you cannot go on face-value alone even if the contractor looks trusting.

A Good Track Record

Having a decent work history is crucial today especially when it comes to general contractors. You are letting these people into your home, trusting them even, and their history could tell you so much about them. A good work record is something to be proud of and something which is going to make a good contractor stand out from the bad ones. You may not think too much about their past experience however it will be something to consider. A contractor can smile at you and look the part but if they don’t have the necessary record to back them up then it’s worth being more cautious.visit this link here!

Fully Licensed and Insured

Contractors undertake a variety of tasks, many of which are quite dangerous, and it essentially means they must be qualified to carry out the work successfully. Any contractor you allow to work in your home must be fully qualified, licensed and insured; it is really the only way to protect your home. If you hire someone who isn’t qualified then it is likely they aren’t insured which means should something go wrong they can disappear into the night and leave you with thousands of dollars worth of repairs. Good general contractors will be fully qualified, licensed and insured and if they are not, they should never be allowed into your home.

Good Work Ethics

General Contractor

If the general contractor you choose doesn’t have a good work ethic then it is very unlikely whatever you need done will get completed on time or successfully. No work ethics can be extremely bad and it’ll end up costing you more money. It isn’t difficult to find out about the contractor’s work ethics by simple doing some research. You can ask to see some references from previous contractors or search online for feedback and reviews. Usually if a contractor has done some shoddy work you’ll find out about it online; it might take a little while but you’ll find it.see more from http://www.wikihow.com/Write-a-Subcontractor-Contract

Take Your Time to Decide

Narrowing the field down to three or four contractors can be fantastic but you still need to be cautious. Screening really helps to ensure the contractor you let into your home is competent and able to carry out his or her duties fully without issue. Don’t jump into making a decision for a new general contractor, take your time and you will find the best for your money.

Who and How Much Do You Tip for Home Services?

Before owning my first house, I’d always been a renter. That means that all the home repairs that my house needs was took care of by my landlord. I never had to hire any handyman service company since everything was taken care of by my landlord. On the rare occasion that my landlord doesn’t know how to repair something, he’ll call someone to fix it. Nonetheless, I never really know how to deal with home repairs. Now that I have my own house, every home repair ends up getting ignored until the last minute but by then, it’ll all be too much to repair.

If you want to know about home repair myths, click here.

Because of my lack of experience dealing with home repairs, I will also get stressed out when I call someone to fix the damage for me. I don’t know how to deal with them. What’s the proper etiquette? Do I tip? No? What is it?

When I needed to move my stuff to my new house, I hired movers. They were pretty helpful, actually. They did an amazing job and I was happy to give them a generous tip. Factor in my feeling of satisfaction because of my new home, and that should give you an idea of how much I gave them. They made one of the stressful moments of my life almost hassle-free. Of course, I was going to give them something to say thanks.

Still, I don’t know the protocol on handymen services. I read somewhere, on CNN maybe, that you don’t need to tip handymen. I was surprised by this since they do hard labor and they should, in my opinion, receive a little something for their work. Most of the work they do is something we don’t want to do, which is why we hire them in the first place. You have to agree that while some of their repairs are pretty basic, some of their tasks can become quite complicated, and even dangerous. This is the main reason why I am considering giving them tip if they do their job right.

Many would say that you need to tip 15 – 20% of the full price. I would say scrap this math for handyman services. Most of them charge by the hour. Imagine 10 hours of work then add another 15% to that – that’s actually substantial. For repairs that take long to finish, here’s what I do. I will ask for an estimate, one for the price and another for time. If they are done before their estimated time, I’d be happy to give them the quoted amount – consider the full payment as the tip. On the other hand, if they exceed their quoted time, I would pay extra only if I see they’re working hard. If I see them toying around and not actually focusing on the work, I will only pay the quoted price. If the cause of delay is a harder-than-expected repair, I would pay the extra hour and add around 10% (only for overtime).

So, that’s my tip (no pun intended). I’ve researched this topic and found no agreed upon protocol so I made my own. I hope that you get to use it when you hire a handyman service.
