Hiring a Professional Handyman – When to Ask For Their Help

handyman Ok sign

Hiring someone to repair a home issues don’t need to be a hassle. Whenever you call a professional for a home repair, you should expect him to arrive as soon as possible. Some home repairs are crucial to a home that a quick fix is needed. If you don’t know how to do a quick or temporary fix yourself, you’re going to need the help of a handyman. A professional handyman should be able to fix most common household problems. However, the problem with most professional handymen is their availability.

It is important to understand that hiring a handyman is mostly done for general maintenance projects and quick home repair. For full blown renovations, you will need the services of more than a handyman. For instance, if you want a kitchen renovation, you should call the services of home remodeling companies. In case of a small leak repair on your faucet, that is the time to get a handyman service.

When Do You Need a Handyman?

The answer is quite tricky. There are many homeowners, especially older people, who know their way around home repairs. Most of them have their own tools inside their garage. These type of homeowners are more than willing to fix their own home issues if they have the time. Unfortunately, these types of homeowners are diminishing quickly. It seems like only the older generations still practice do-it-yourself fixing inside their home.

For majority of homeowners, owning a handyman contact is crucial. Most homeowners, especially newer ones, don’t know even basic home repairs. The new generation of homeowners don’t practice basic repairs inside their homes. Instead, their time is used mostly for leisure and other activities. The newer generation seems to focus more on work and pleasure compared to their older counterpart. Because of this new way of life, home repair and maintenance are often ignored. You can blame their busy lifestyle they lead for their lack of home repair skills.

New Generation Homeowners

As I’ve said above, younger homeowners don’t know their way around home repairs. Most of them don’t even bother to try fix simple home issues. Instead, most of them resort to calling a professional for even a tiny bit of repair. For handyman companies, this is great news. However, for older folks, this is a disgrace. If you talk to baby boomers, especially the men, you will get the impression that they will not think that you’re man enough if you don’t do basic home repairs. It’s an old view on things but it’s understandable considering their old upbringing.

Additionally, because of the advent of the internet, most homeowners can easily contact someone they need. If they need a door repairman, a quick search on Google would get them just that. A window replacement perhaps? – a quick conversation with Siri and they’ll get it. Heck, most of our needs can be accessed through the internet. It’s no wonder why so many homeowners find home repair skills a useless skill to have.

The Takeaway

For the older generation, hiring a handyman is not that usual. This is because most of them know basic home repairs. For younger homeowners however, the opposite is true. Younger homeowners are too busy with their work and other miscellaneous activity that they would gladly hire a handyman to fix even the simplest of jobs. Whatever the case is, if hiring a handyman can help a homeowner fix a problem, that is all that matters.

Qualities To Look For – Choosing A Construction Company

Construction companies work on many projects which includes commercial and residential units. Most companies will work on both small and big projects as long as they get hired. However, it is no secret that not all construction companies do quality work. Some companies have their own specialization and will be weak in other areas. Some companies may be well-rounded with regards to their service. You should select a company based on your needs.

If you want to ensure quality in your construction projects, you need to hire the best company you can find. Make sure to consider the reputation and trustworthiness of the company you are considering to hire. You also need to consider the pricing since it will affect the feasibility of the project. Some homeowners would rather save a lot of money than to ensure quality. In my honest opinion, you should not sacrifice quality for a little bit of money. Ensure quality across the board when you can.

The company you choose should have:

The right amount of experience

The construction company you choose should have the right experience to make sure that can handle the project efficiently. Choose the company based on the type of project you are doing.

Ask for feedback

If you know any friends or neighbors who recently did renovations on their home, you should ask them about their endeavors. They will be able to give you valuable advice since they have first-hand experience in dealing with the construction companies. If you see that they are satisfied with the service they got, you should then consider that particular company for your project. You can check for reviews online if you don’t have any neighbors or friends who had recent construction work.

Check trustworthiness

Look for a trustworthy firm. If you can, do a site visit of the company and gauge their attitude towards their customers. You can tell a lot by the way they interact with other people. Make sure that you are comfortable with them around before dealing with them.

Check their previous work

If the company is confident on the quality of their work, they will be willing to show their previous works to you. It is good to check their past work to give you an idea of what to expect. If possible, choose a project that closely resembles your own to check whether they can do a good job with it. If the company shows signs of unwillingness to show their work, look for other firms.

Proper license to operate

Only hire a company that has all the proper licenses and business permits. A company that is operating without a license is not liable to any insurance claims so to safeguard yourself from any potential damages, you need a company that operates legally.

Hiring the best professionals for the job is as simple as knowing your own preferences. If you know exactly what you want, you can easily find a company that fits your needs. The key here is to keep looking for a company until you find the right one. After all, there are many construction companies in any given city.

However, this can cost you quite a lot because manufacturers are paying for storage fees, and since assembled furniture require big spaces, they will past this fee to the customers. You can also have the handyman order the furniture for you then build it inside your home when it arrives. This would cut your effort to basically just clicking the payment form. It is only up to you to select which one you prefer. Just bear in mind that you should also consider other factors and not focus on price.

Couple Sues HGTV’s ‘Love It Or List It’ For Tearing Up Their Home

Homeowners who appear on the popular HGTV series “Love It Or List It” are usually offered one of two options: stay in a home newly renovated by Toronto-based interior designer Hilary Farr, or put their place on the market with Toronto-based realtor David Visentin.

A couple in Raleigh, North Carolina, are going for a third option: Sue the production company that makes “Love It Or List It,” as well as the contractor who did the home renovation, according to the Raleigh News-Observer.

Deena Murphy and Timothy Sullivan appeared on the popular HGTV show in December. They hoped to make their 2,400-square-foot home suitable for foster children, or find another house that fit their lives better.

The show typically climaxes with a big reveal of the renovated home while the homeowners dither about selling or staying. According to the lawsuit, the couple discovered a different kind of big “big reveal” after the show finished shooting.

The lawsuit alleges that Aaron Fitz Construction “irreparably damaged” the floor, leaving numerous holes “through which vermin could enter the house,” as well as unpainted surfaces, low-grade industrial carpet, and painted-shut windows.

The couple also claims Big Coat TV, the production company behind “Love It Or List It,” did not employ a licensed architect for the renovation plans nor had a licensed North Carolina real estate agent show Murphy and Sullivan properties on the market, according to CBS News.

“Big Coat’s purported agreement admits that it is in the business of television production, not construction,” the suit alleged. “The homeowners’ funds essentially pay the cost of creating a stage set for this television series.”

HGTV
Designer Hilary Farr and realtor David Visentin are the stars of the HGTV show, “Love It Or List It.”

The lawsuit contends Murphy and Sullivan gave the production company $140,000 for the renovation, only $85,000 of which went to the remodel. The rest was allegedly used by the production company to make the series.

The Huffington Post reached out to James White, the couple’s attorney, and to Aaron Fitz Construction, but received no response.

Earlier, White told Today.com that Big Coat TV made decisions that favored “the television show but not the homeowners.”

Meanwhile, the “Love It Or List It” Facebook page disputed the claims in the lawsuit in the post below:

Curious about what the renovation looked like? The episode featuring Murphy and Sullivan is scheduled to re-air Saturday night at 7 p.m. ET, according to HGTV’s website.

What to Look For In a Good General Contractor?

General Contractor

General contractors are the people you allow into your home and carry out some serious duties but do you fully trust in their abilities? The problem with most home owners is that they hire a contractor too quickly without screening them which often spells trouble. While there are many great contractors, there are also many terrible ones too but how can you tell the difference? The following are just a few examples of what you need to look for in a good general contractor.

Excellent References

Everyone has to start somewhere and newbie’s don’t always have references to back up their qualifications but that does not mean you should be reckless. When you let a general contractor into your home, you must be one hundred percent sure they are trustworthy. References can help give you a whole new picture of someone and believe me, they are powerful stuff. If contractors haven’t had glowing reports in the past then there is a reason; and that is why asking for references are crucial. Unfortunately you cannot go on face-value alone even if the contractor looks trusting.

A Good Track Record

Having a decent work history is crucial today especially when it comes to general contractors. You are letting these people into your home, trusting them even, and their history could tell you so much about them. A good work record is something to be proud of and something which is going to make a good contractor stand out from the bad ones. You may not think too much about their past experience however it will be something to consider. A contractor can smile at you and look the part but if they don’t have the necessary record to back them up then it’s worth being more cautious.visit this link here!

Fully Licensed and Insured

Contractors undertake a variety of tasks, many of which are quite dangerous, and it essentially means they must be qualified to carry out the work successfully. Any contractor you allow to work in your home must be fully qualified, licensed and insured; it is really the only way to protect your home. If you hire someone who isn’t qualified then it is likely they aren’t insured which means should something go wrong they can disappear into the night and leave you with thousands of dollars worth of repairs. Good general contractors will be fully qualified, licensed and insured and if they are not, they should never be allowed into your home.

Good Work Ethics

General Contractor

If the general contractor you choose doesn’t have a good work ethic then it is very unlikely whatever you need done will get completed on time or successfully. No work ethics can be extremely bad and it’ll end up costing you more money. It isn’t difficult to find out about the contractor’s work ethics by simple doing some research. You can ask to see some references from previous contractors or search online for feedback and reviews. Usually if a contractor has done some shoddy work you’ll find out about it online; it might take a little while but you’ll find it.see more from http://www.wikihow.com/Write-a-Subcontractor-Contract

Take Your Time to Decide

Narrowing the field down to three or four contractors can be fantastic but you still need to be cautious. Screening really helps to ensure the contractor you let into your home is competent and able to carry out his or her duties fully without issue. Don’t jump into making a decision for a new general contractor, take your time and you will find the best for your money.

Who and How Much Do You Tip for Home Services?

Before owning my first house, I’d always been a renter. That means that all the home repairs that my house needs was took care of by my landlord. I never had to hire any handyman service company since everything was taken care of by my landlord. On the rare occasion that my landlord doesn’t know how to repair something, he’ll call someone to fix it. Nonetheless, I never really know how to deal with home repairs. Now that I have my own house, every home repair ends up getting ignored until the last minute but by then, it’ll all be too much to repair.

If you want to know about home repair myths, click here.

Because of my lack of experience dealing with home repairs, I will also get stressed out when I call someone to fix the damage for me. I don’t know how to deal with them. What’s the proper etiquette? Do I tip? No? What is it?

When I needed to move my stuff to my new house, I hired movers. They were pretty helpful, actually. They did an amazing job and I was happy to give them a generous tip. Factor in my feeling of satisfaction because of my new home, and that should give you an idea of how much I gave them. They made one of the stressful moments of my life almost hassle-free. Of course, I was going to give them something to say thanks.

Still, I don’t know the protocol on handymen services. I read somewhere, on CNN maybe, that you don’t need to tip handymen. I was surprised by this since they do hard labor and they should, in my opinion, receive a little something for their work. Most of the work they do is something we don’t want to do, which is why we hire them in the first place. You have to agree that while some of their repairs are pretty basic, some of their tasks can become quite complicated, and even dangerous. This is the main reason why I am considering giving them tip if they do their job right.

Many would say that you need to tip 15 – 20% of the full price. I would say scrap this math for handyman services. Most of them charge by the hour. Imagine 10 hours of work then add another 15% to that – that’s actually substantial. For repairs that take long to finish, here’s what I do. I will ask for an estimate, one for the price and another for time. If they are done before their estimated time, I’d be happy to give them the quoted amount – consider the full payment as the tip. On the other hand, if they exceed their quoted time, I would pay extra only if I see they’re working hard. If I see them toying around and not actually focusing on the work, I will only pay the quoted price. If the cause of delay is a harder-than-expected repair, I would pay the extra hour and add around 10% (only for overtime).

So, that’s my tip (no pun intended). I’ve researched this topic and found no agreed upon protocol so I made my own. I hope that you get to use it when you hire a handyman service.

Handyman Business Myths Exposed

There are a lot of things that most people don’t know about the handy man business. There is a lot of bad information in the handy man business that is circulating around the internet and other informational sources.

http://www.homeimprovementpages.com.au/article/what_jobs_can_a_handyman_do

In this article, I am going to show you several handy man company myths that you’re probably aware of. These misinformation often hold back people from hiring a handyman. If you want more information regarding the handyman business, you better read this article.

Myth 1: Handymen need to know how to do everything

A lot of homeowners think that handymen should know every repair inside the house. This includes plumbing, electrical, HVAC, door, roof, window, and every other part of the house.

While there are many handymen that offer more services, not all of them know every repair inside a house. Every handyman has run into an issue that they don’t know how to solve. This doesn’t necessarily make them unskilled, they just don’t know everything is all. This is normal and should be expected of every handyman business company.

A lot of handyman companies will offer limited services, services that they know they’re good at. Some companies even have one specialized skill that they rely on. Like I said, not all companies offer the same thing. If you want to know more about different companies, you need to inquire and give each and every one a call.

Myth #2:  They won’t accept small jobs

Many homeowners think that handymen only fix major problems. A lot of them won’t bother calling professional help for what they think is a small problem. What ends up happening is they fix the problem themselves and end up making it worse.

Most Common House Repair Problems for Homeowners

If you don’t believe this, try to call in your local handyman and ask for help on even the menial task. Some companies even prepares small job because they can do many of it in a day. Major repair jobs on the other hand, will take time and will give a lot of stress to the handymen.

Myth #3:  Their quote/estimate don’t have a wiggle room

If you call in and requested a quote over the phone, they will quickly arrive with a number if you thoroughly describe the repairs that you need. You can also request a visit to have a much better estimate of the repair cost.

Most homeowners think that once the estimate is agreed upon, that is the actual cost of the repair. There are times where the repair would cost much higher or lower depending on the type of repair. Either way, don’t think that the estimate is the final cost of the repair.
